When was it first applied?

The first use of radiofrequency devices in the field of cosmetic dermatology has been since the 2000s, and the first use in the field of cosmetic gynecology has been since the early 2010s.

Vaginal Rejuvenation and Tightening via Radiofrequency

Treatment of vaginal rejuvenation and tightening via radiofrequency is a non-surgical method. In the process, which takes 20 minutes on average, collagen production increases with the heat sent to the tissue by the radiofrequency device. Thus, the vagina is narrowed, tightened, rejuvenated and its sensitivity is quite increased.

Radiofrequency vaginal rejuvenation is tolerated quite easily by patients, does not pose any risk, and does not require anesthesia. No downtime needed, and it is possible to return to social life immediately after treatment. There is no prohibition of sexual intercourse after the procedure. The expected effect is observed after an average of 3 weeks after treatment. It is recommended that the application be made in 3-6 sessions every 2-4 weeks.

What are Vaginal Radiofrequency Devices?

ThermiVa Genital Radiofrequency Device: Transcutaneous Temperature Controlled Radiofrequency

ThermiVa genital radiofrequency (RF) device has a thermometer at the end of the head, and the device regulates its temperature. For this reason, the device is also called “Transcutaneous Temperature Controlled RF”. For the effectiveness of the process, a temperature between 42-46 degrees Celsius is usually reached.

For vaginal rejuvenation treatment with ThermiVa, the application is made on each vaginal wall for an average of 5 minutes. Thus, the four vaginal walls and vaginal entrance are scanned in 20 minutes in total. In the external genitalia, the head, which is moved in the style of "painting with a brush on the canvas", is applied to all outer lips, inner lips, clitoris area, vaginal entrance, and perineum. A single session treatment of the entire genital area with ThermiVa radiofrequency takes about 10 minutes in total.

C500 Urogyne Genital Radiofrequency Device

C500 Urogyne, which works with the principle of "Tecartherapy" or “Diathermi”, is a genital radiofrequency device that can operate at three manually adjustable frequencies (0.8MHz, 1.0MHz, and 1.2MHz) with maximum tissue absorption. Like in laser, in RF, the efficiency increases as the energy absorption by the tissue increases.

With the different probe heads on the C500 genital radiofrequency device, the application can be made into the vagina and the vulva. Stress incontinence treatments, vaginal tightening, external genital area wrinkle treatment, and orgasm treatments are the most common application areas in women.

It also has a thin cap developed for the treatment of anal incontinence. Application caps are with temperature sensors. It can also be used in the treatment of urinary incontinence after prostatectomy surgery in men.

Viveve Vaginal Radiofrequency Device

Single session monopolar RF with superficial cooling vaginal radiofrequency technology called “Viveve” can also be used for vaginal rejuvenation, introital tightening, stress urinary incontinence treatment, and sexual enhancement. This technology can deliver a high amount of energy such as 90 J/cm2 to the tissue through the cooling system at the probe tip, and this energy can penetrate to a depth of 3-4 mm, creating a high thermal efficiency.

Viveve vaginal radiofrequency device is mainly applied for reasons such as sexual pleasure enhancement, orgasm function improvement, vaginal enlargement treatment, and urinary incontinence treatment without any surgery. The advantage of the viveve treatment is that it is a single session. A very safe, painless, and single-session treatment takes an average of 30 minutes.

The effect with Viveve Rf continues for 12 months.

MonaLisa Touch Bipolar Radiofrequency Device

DEKA integrated bipolar vaginal radiofrequency into the SmartXide laser it produced for the MonaLisa Touch technique in 2020. Thus, a laser device was combined with bipolar RF for the first time.

Vaginal Radiofrequency Contraindications

Vaginal radiofrequency is contraindicated, and not recommended in the following situations:

• Moderate or severe degree of uterine, bladder, rectum prolapses
• Pregnancy
• Menstrual period
• During the menstrual period, genital radiofrequency is not applied because of vulnerability to infections.
• Presence of active HPV (genital wart virus) or HSV (genital herpes virus) infections. Vaginal radiofrequency is not applied in active HPV or HSV, as it may increase the spread of infection.
• Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
• Vaginal radiofrequency is not applied to people with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD),an obsession-related psychiatric condition.
• Psychiatric or severe psychological disorders
• Vaginal radiofrequency treatments are not recommended in conditions such as depression, anxiety, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder),or psychosis.
• Mentally disabled
• All of the aesthetic operations are contraindicated in mentally disabled people.
• Abnormal PAP Smear Test
• In case of cellular problems in the cervix and vagina in the smear test, vaginal radiofrequency is not applied. It is contraindicated.
• Cancer or suspicion of cancer
• Vaginal radiofrequency is not applied in cases of incompletely diagnosed genital cancer or precancerous condition
• Use of pacemaker in the heart
• Patients with excessive expectations

Vaginal radiofrequency can be applied from the third month after the delivery, during breastfeeding.

Vaginal Radiofrequency in IUD (Intrauterine Device) Users 

Yes, RF can be done in IUD users. There is no need to remove the IUD before the vaginal radiofrequency procedure in those who use the IUD.

Is vaginal laser or radiofrequency better?
